Permeation describes the process by which a substance migrates through a material. This chemical process occurs in three steps: first, the gas or molecule is absorbed at the surface of the material (sorption); then it diffuses through the material (diffusion); and finally, it escapes on the other side (desorption). In hydrogen applications, permeation is of particular importance, as H₂ molecules can easily penetrate many materials due to their small size and high diffusivity.
